Water Hardness Test Kit - Total Hardness (TH) Drop Test

TH0064

Water Hardness Test - Total Hardness (TH)

Your water hardness test kit contains 1 graduated tube, 1 blue reagent, 1 yellow reagent and 1 colourless reagent.

The calcium and magnesium ions in your water are what cause scale to form and limescale to build up. This kit lets you measure the hardness of your water. The result is given in French degrees (°f; 1 °f = 10 ppm) and depends on the amount of calcium and magnesium salts in the water.

Carry out the test as close as possible to your incoming water supply. Before testing, make sure the water in the graduated tube is the water you want to analyse.

Benefits of the TH hardness test:

  • Easy to use
  • Accurate results
  • Simple, quality packaging

How to use the TH hardness test

  1. Rinse the graduated tube several times with the water to be tested, then fill it to the 10 ml mark
  2. Add:
    • 2 drops of yellow reagent. Shake
    • 5 drops of blue reagent. Shake
  3. Turns blue: TH = 0 °f (0 ppm)
  4. Turns pink: TH > 0 °f

Titrate with the colourless reagent, adding it drop by drop and shaking after each drop, until the sample turns blue.

The water hardness test kit

Water hardness test kit comprising 1 graduated tube, 1 blue reagent, 1 yellow reagent and 1 colourless reagent.

This kit lets you measure the hardness of your water, also known as total hardness (TH).
The result is given in French degrees (°f) and depends on the amount of calcium and magnesium salts in the water.
1 French degree (°f) = 10 mg/l CaCO3 = 10 ppm

Water hardness ranges:

  • 0 to 8 °f (0-80 ppm) = very soft water
  • 8 to 12 °f (80-120 ppm) = soft water
  • 12 to 30 °f (120-300 ppm) = moderately hard water
  • 30 to 40 °f (300-400 ppm) = hard water
  • Above 40 °f (400 ppm) = very hard water
